Whether you’re working on a specific problem or treating the body as a whole, the Bowen sequences will always be interrupted by a therapeutic pause during which the therapist will leave the room. This is an essential component of the Bowen Technique, as this pause enables the system to integrate all the information that is transmitted by the moves. This awareness will then incite the body to shift from sympathetic (stress) to parasympathetic mode (deep relaxation). The body can heal itself.
A Bowen session lasts for about 1 hour. The moves will usually be made on the bare skin but it is of utmost important that the client be warmly covered and in a calm surrounding. After the session it is recommended to drink water, to rest and to go for a walk. The session’s effects continue for several days and in order to avoid any interference no other therapies should be undertaken during that period.
